About

History

Back in 1996 Independent Newspapers decided to do something proactive to promote and develop exceptional print advertising in South Africa, and so The Eagles Print Awards were born. Since then this award has become the benchmark for print advertising in South Africa. With the Black Eagle (which has only ever been awarded 5 times) becoming the industry's most coveted local accolade.

The Eagles are unlike any other advertising awards. Firstly, there are only 2 judges. To ensure that the level of creative excellence matches global standards, these judges are always world-renowned creatives invited from international agencies. So it's a local award with international standards and an international flavour. In addition to deciding who gets an Eagle for innovative, impactful or beautifully crafted work (or a combination of all 3), these advertising legends also deliver inspiring lectures at the annual Eagles Breakfast Seminars, which have become a highlight in the diaries of South Africa's creative advertising community.

WHY ENTER

Gold Eagle winners win an all expenses paid trip for two to the 2012 Cannes Advertising Festival. Black Eagle winners win three tickets to Cannes.

THE BLACK EAGLE

The coveted Black Eagle is something extraordinarily special, awarded only if the judges feel that an entry has achieved an exceptional standard of creative excellence.
In fact, it's so rare, only a handful of wide-eyed hopefuls have taken one home over the years:

Guidelines

Gold Eagles

Only one Gold Eagle may be awarded per category and only Gold category winners are eligible to win the Black Eagle.

Silver & Bronze Eagles

Should the entries be of a high standard, multiple Silver and Bronze Eagles may be awarded per category.

The Cannes Prize

Only 2 tickets to Cannes will be issued per Gold-winning entry, and only in the names of the entrants who appear on the original submitted entry form. Should one member of the winning creative team have left the originating agency's employ in the interim, only one ticket will be issued. In a case where both team members have left the agency, a single ticket will still be issued – for the sole use of the winning team's Creative Director. In all other circumstances, the prize will be forfeited. Should an entry for the same ad/campaign (from corporate, product, best tactical use of media or campaign) win a Gold Eagle in more than one of the categories in which it will be entered, the entry will still only be entitled to a maximum of two tickets to Cannes for the multiple gold wins for the entry.

The Black Eagle

Should a Gold become a Black Eagle, 3 (as opposed to 2) Cannes tickets will be issued to the Gold winner, with the third ticket going to a deserving creative contributor (nominated by the Creative Director).

The Fledgling Eagle

There is only one Fledgling Award and it will be given to the most outstanding student piece with the proviso that the recipient/s are still studying at the time of judging. The winning Fledglings will receive an Eagle Awards Certificate and have their work published on the 2011 Eagle Awards Winners CD. The trip to Cannes does not apply.

Public Service & Charities

In the Public Service & Charities category, only a Gold Eagle (no Silver or Bronze) may be awarded and will not carry the Cannes prize, nor will the winning work be eligible for Black Eagle consideration.

INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS

The Eagle Print Awards were founded in 1996 by Independent Newspapers, and have been proudly sponsored by them ever since in order to promote and develop exceptional print advertising in South Africa. Since their inception, the Eagles have become the benchmark for print advertising with the Black Eagle (which has only been awarded 5 times since the Eagles' inception) becoming the industry's most coveted local accolade.

Independent Newspapers is the leading newspaper group in South Africa, publishing more than 30 daily and weekly newspapers in the country's 3 major metropolitan areas.

All of the company's newspaper titles – including the Cape Times, Cape Argus, The Mercury, The Star, Daily News and Pretoria News, among others – are constantly reviewed to ensure that they are strategically positioned to serve the needs of their readers and advertisers in clearly defined key markets.

With aggregate weekly sales of 2,7 million copies in Gauteng, Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape, the group currently receives 34.9% of the total advertising spend in the newspaper market and reaches 57.2% of English/Zulu newspaper readers in these areas.

Arguably South Africa's premier news group, it's only fitting that Independent Newspapers sponsor the country's premier print advertising awards.

We wish The Eagle Awards 2011 entrants good luck.
